8th Fishing-Ground Charts Study Group: Open
Research Meeting (January 2020)

This joint research project builds upon and expands the studies on the history of maritime regions and seaside villages conducted at the ISJFC since its establishment. Oceans not only produce marine resources but also offers a wealth of other valuable assets. As it is developed and utilized, the sea has become a space where people, goods, and information flow, resulting in the accumulation of vast social and folk knowledge. At the same time, the sea has been a source of conflict, sparking disputes between individuals, villages, and even nations over territorial rights, leading to lasting negative memories. Historically, disasters and major accidents have frequently occurred in seaside villages. The primary aim of this joint project is to conduct interdisciplinary research on the history and culture of maritime regions and seaside communities, using the landscapes depicted in illustrated fishing ground maps and leveraging the human resources of the ISJFC.
The research findings will be compiled into a collection of papers following interdisciplinary discussions during the joint research sessions. Additionally, the project will digitize the fishing-ground charts in the ISJFC's collection and create a database of fishery maps, making these resources widely accessible to the public for research purposes.
